Inflammable plastics (PVC, PE, etc.) of unprotected electric cables and insulation can carry fire to other areas far from the fire’s original source. Such fires produce strong toxic and corrosive fumes and fire condensates which are harmful to people and animals and, more often than not, also lead to extensive secondary damage on buildings, equipment, and inventory.
The system BC-Brandschutz cable bandage (BC-Brandschutz-Kabelvollbandage) is an effective fire protection covering that prevents the emergence of a fire on horizontally and vertically laid electric cables, cable bundles, cable trays, and other fire loads. In the case of a fire, the cable bandage forms a microporous, heat-insulating two-sided foam layer which also prevents the spread of fire on the inside of the cable bandage. Therefore, it is often the only suitable fire prevention measure in difficult cases such as cramped space conditions, for example.
The new approval Z-19.22-1835 for the BC-Brandschutz cable bandage system of 4. June 2007 provides a new area of application, with a protection period of at least 90 minutes between space-enclosing structural components.
In its application in the system “BC-Brandschutz cable bandage” (BC-Brandschutz-Kabelvollbandage), the flame resistant fire protection textile (building material class DIN 4102-B1) with the new product name of BC-Brandschutz bandage KVB (BC-Brandschutz-Bandage KVB) (since 6/07) is a precaution to thwart the emergence of a fire and prevent the spread of fire via electric lines (cables) or line systems (cable systems).
In the event of a spontaneous ignition of electric lines (cables) and line systems (cable systems) through short circuit or overheating, the cable bandages prevent for at least 90 minutes the spread of fire via the electric lines (cables) and line systems (cable systems) equipped with the fire protection covering, particularly due to the effectiveness of the insulating layer-forming building material.
The size of the cables or cable bundles or their total ladder cross section and the size of the cables’ supporting structures is not limited (for details, see Approval Z-19.22-1835).
Cable bandages are also frequently used in new buildings, for example, in connection with approved firestop systems (firewall S 90 / UNO), through approval on a case-by-case basis, for enclosing the fire load as a comparable solution to I-ducts if the local boundary conditions cannot be implemented in terms of fire protection.
The additional firestops prevent the possible spread of fire and smoke into other adjacent fire areas (for details, see advisory opinion IBMB-3938/9389).
According to the advisory opinion IBMB-3331/1071, the cable bandages – provided that the mandatory measures as per MLAR (guideline for line systems) are not possible due to existing installations – represent a protective system which achieves roughly the same protection goals as those specified in the MBO (model building regulations) in connection with the MLAR (for details on the exact areas of application, see sheet 7).
